Passage 1
Granddad’s Spaghetti
All our grandchildren love spaghetti.Especially the spaghetti their granddad makes. He
is not an Italian but he does make good spaghetti. This is how he makes it.
The first stage is to make the sauce. He likes to make a Bolognese sauce and the
grandchildren love that one the best.First he cooks one pound of ground beef and one diced
onion in a frying pan. Then,he opens a tin of tomatoes and adds the tomatoes to the meat in
the plat.He adds garlic, about two teaspoonfuls of mixed herbs,a small amount of pepper
and salt and a tiny amount of almond essence.Next,he chops a handful of celery into small
pieces, adds the celery to the pan and cooks the sauce slowly for about half an hour.
The next stage is to cook the pasta. The pasta is put into a big pan of boiling water with
a small amount of butter but no salt.By this time every one is hungry because the sauce
smells SO good. The pasta takes about 12 minutes to cook.It should be al de7zte,that is
Italian for not too soft.t.You should just be able to feel the pasta when you pass it between
your teeth.
The grandchildren have to be kept well Out of the way in the next and final stage. Now
the boiling water is poured Out of the pasta pan,the pasta is piled on the biggest dish we
have in the kitchen and the sauce is poured into our biggest bowl.By this time all the
grandchildren have put the plates, spoons and forks on the table.
Earlier in the morning the garlic bread was prepared.A long loaf, spread with garlic
butter and wrapped in foil, was put in the oven with the timer.set so that it is just ready to
eat when the spaghetti is put on the table. So we are all about to eat.Wait,we have
forgotten something.Jane, the youngest grandchild cries Out.。‘Where’S the parmesan
cheese?’Benedict, her brother knows just where Granddad keeps it.He gets down from the
table, races to the shelf and holds it aloft.Everybody cheers.
